It’s time to reclaim your crown
Too many women let shame run their lives. They suffer from urine leaking or pain during sex or pelvic floor dysfunction, and they understandably go into hiding. They feel embarrassed, like there’s something wrong with them. And when they do dare to ask for help? Doctors confirm their worst fears – that there’s something wrong with them. That they’re the problem.
When in fact, you are the solution.
What you’re facing are very common physical challenges that many women go through, yet no one talks about, because they feel ashamed. Because they’re being made to feel weak by the medical profession. Because they think they’re the only one going through this.
You’re not the only one.
You are the solution, because you have the power within you to find your path to heal. You have the power to become your own advocate, your own guru, and to become the leader of this journey, the one who takes control, gets the right people on her team, lets go of the people who put her down, and chooses solutions that align with what her body and mind need.
And when you surround yourself with support from someone who’s been there, someone who felt ashamed too, who felt like giving up too, someone who found a way out of the Doctor Road Show and managed to heal and live a full, satisfying life, all of that becomes a little easier.
Here’s how.
Find a Solution Faster as You Learn from Someone Else’s Experience
Most doctors are not educated on pelvic floor health. Med schools don’t train them, and when woman after woman comes with the same issues, they still don’t take the time to learn more about the pelvic floor. Even when they try to help, it’s often with what they know – like drugs and surgeries – which haven’t actually been tested on women, and often make symptoms worse.
Melissa went to 12 healthcare professionals, and heard contradicting opinions, before she gave up. That’s very common, with 7 healthcare professionals being the average number a woman with pelvic floor issues sees.
For Melissa, it was hard to know which recommendation to trust. She’s a programmer, not a doctor. But no one around her seemed to experience what she was experiencing, so she had no one to rely on besides these doctors and their contradicting recommendations.
If you’re in the same situation, and you can find someone who’s been through the journey and came out the other end, your journey to health becomes faster and more possible.
Get Support from Someone Who Gets it and Won’t Let You Give Up
If you’re on this journey, you know that contradicting recommendations are just the tip of the iceberg.
One of the most infuriating parts of this journey – what I call the Doctor Road Show – is that doctors often say that women with pelvic floor issues are too sensitive, too hysterical.
And so women, on top of all the very real physical challenges they face, have to deal with an emotional roller coaster when doctors dismiss their pain, discomfort or dysfunction, and with the growing disbelief from people around them, who might end up thinking that, if all these doctors dismiss the complaints, it must indeed be in your head.
It’s very common for women to experience secondary depression on this journey, because they feel both debilitated and alone.
It takes a lot of courage to keep going anyway and to advocate for yourself in a very broken system. It’s not an easy journey, but it’s easier when you’re not going through it alone.
It’s easier when you have someone who has been there, who gets it. Someone who’s gotten the same comments, felt the same isolation, was on the brink of losing hope like you were, but found a way out, and is committed to not letting you give up.
Get the Tools to Be Proactive Even When it’s Challenging
A great mentor will teach you, coach you, believe in you and support you. But a great mentor will also keep you accountable to keep being proactive.
For Melissa, that meant she started logging her symptoms, research beyond what the doctors said, do her exercises, learn to eat healthier, speak up when someone put her down, and be loving toward herself even when it was challenging to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
There were so many moments she wanted to give up, or she “fell off the wagon” and didn’t know how to get back. An effective mentor gives you the tools you need to develop these skills and take control of your healing journey.
Become the Leader of Your Healing Journey – and of Your Life
A true mentor can guide you through the challenges, but will also teach you how to become her partner in this journey and, gradually, the leader. The one that has the tools, the skills, and the personal power to move toward health, until you no longer need her to mentor you.
An empowering mentor can show you how to own your crown and keep it firm on your head, as you claim being the queen of this journey – and of the rest of your life.
You see, the skills you learn with an effective healthcare mentor can often be replicated to nurture your career, your relationships with others, and your relationship with yourself.
It wasn’t an easy journey for Melissa, but with each step forward, she gained more and more hope. Eventually, she didn’t just make a full recovery, but used her new skills of advocating for herself to negotiate a great raise. Her newfound trust in herself made her believe she can have a relationship again, which got her more proactive socially, and led to finding a new BFF as well.
It’s time for you to become your own guru, too. To heal yourself. And to stop trying to do it all alone. If you want the exact steps you need to take to start healing, watch this video I made for you.
